Shares close at 12-week high after first-half results

AP , TAIPEI

Shares closed at a 12-week high yesterday after most of the public listed firms met the deadline for reporting first-half results.

The TAIEX ended up 92.6 points, or 1.6 percent, higher at 5,858.14 -- the highest since the June 10 closing of 5,867.51. Turn-over was NT$92.39 billion (US$2.7 billion).

Gainers outnumbered decliners 578 versus 137, while 157 finished the session unchanged.

Investors were relieved that all but one of the more than 1,100 listed companies submitted their audited earnings reports before Tuesday's deadline, traders said.

Dynamic random access memory chip makers were among the top performers yesterday on a Chinese-language newspaper report that South Korea's memory chip giant Samsung Electronics will raise contract prices for the first half of September.
