Vendors gear up for love weekend

While lovers are brainstorming about novel ways to impress their significant other on Lovers' Day weekend, businesses are offering a diverse range of products to help heat up the atmosphere.

The traditional Chinese occasion falls on the seventh day of the seventh month on the lunar calendar, which is tomorrow.

According to the Council of Agriculture, rose imports have increased over the past two weeks, mainly from Colombia, Thailand, the Netherlands, Ecuador, Vietnam and Guam.

Other options include the giving of jewelry, electronic items, lifelike figurines and sex-related gadgets or savoring a candle-lit dinner together.

South Korean Samsung Electronics Co, the world's third-largest handset maker, is scheduled to hold an event at 2pm today in Taipei's Warner Village to test the limits of love.

By borrowing the Chinese phrase "ke ku ming hsin" (刻骨銘心) or "engraving love on one's bones and heart," the company will give away three color phones to men who have their lovers' names tattooed on unusual parts of their body.

Samsung will also provide a 33 percent discount on the purchase of selected phone styles when purchase in pairs over the weekend.

Taiwan Cellular Corp (台灣大哥大) will offer preferential prices for purchases on 14 phone models.

"It's like killing two birds with one stone," said April Hong (洪川詠), a public relation official of Taiwan Cellular. "I think this is a good way to celebrate this unique holiday."

For Unusually Enterprise (非比尋常企業), a local company known for manufacturing handmade clay figurines based on customers' photos, Lovers' Day brings another inspiration to their latest product.

The new model -- a lady sitting on a moon and the man standing close -- has quickly become a popular item among lovers , according to a Taipei outlet operator who did not wish to be named.

"Couples began ordering the lifelike products two weeks ago to commemorate their love," she said.

Condom vendors are also busy replenishing their shops with colorful products -- with some specially designed for this weekend.
