Southern park forecast to create 1,000 jobs a month

According to a report in the Chinese-language magazine Win Win Weekly, the Southern Taiwan Science Park (南部科學園區) will need more than 5,000 new workers in the second half of the year.

These workers will be needed in several industries: optoelectronics (3,977), semiconductors (1,190), precision machinery (70) and biotechnology (14)

According to the report, 28,000 people were working in the park late last month.

That figure is reportedly growing by about 1,000 employees a month and is expected to reach between 33,000 and 34,000 by the end of the year.

The Southern Taiwan Science Park Administration has reportedly forecast that a total of 100,000 people will be working in the park by 2009 with an annual turnover of NT$1 trillion.

That figure the estimated turnover for the Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park (新竹科學園區) this year.

According to Tai Chien (戴謙), director-general of the Southern Taiwan Science Park Administration, that figure does not include the liquid crystal display TV area which will open next February and is expected to require 30,000 employees.

Tai estimates that the park can hold about 126,000 employees, the report said.

Officials have said that the Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park creates three employment opportunities outside the park for each person employed in the park. Based on this, the Southern Taiwan Science Park should indirectly create another 360,000 jobs outside the park once it reaches full employment.

According to the magazine's statistics, those employed in the southern park should have good chances of increasing their salaries and receiving promotions.
