    ¡½ Fourth largest for US patents
    Taiwan obtained the fourth largest number of patents in the USlast year, behind only the US, Japan and Germany, the Ministry of Economic Affairs said Tuesday.
    Statistics from the US Patent and Trademark Office of the Department of Commerce showed that the total number of patents approved by the US for Taiwanese company and individual inventors was 6,676 last year. Meanwhile, the US obtained 98,598 patents, Japan 37,250, and Germany 12,140.

    ¡½ Overdue loan rate falls
    Taiwanese banks had NT557.2 billion of overdue loans at the end of last month, with the bad-loan ratio falling to 3.71 percent from 4.33 percent on Dec. 31, the Bureau of Monetary Affairssaid in a statement yesterday.
    Including those lendings that are classified as loans under surveillance, the banks had a total of NT$770.2 billion of bad loans, about 5.13 percent of total lending, at the end of May, compared to NT$885.8 billion, or 6.08 percent on Dec. 31.

    ¡½ CAL takes ungraded airbuses
    China Airlines (µØ¯è) yesterday took delivery of its first A330-300 passenger jet, equipped with a high tech audio video entertainment system, the company said in a statement.
    The airline said it also won two major awards Monday from Manchester International Airport after being selected as the"best overall airline"and"best cargo airline."

    ¡½ NT dollar falls
    The New Taiwan dollar yesterday traded lower against its US counterpart, declining NT$0.016 to close at NT$33.767 on the Taipei foreign exchange market.
    Turnover was US$510 million.
