Taiwanese expats sign up for local high-tech jobs

CNA , NEW YORK

More than 450 overseas Taiwan-ese have signed up for interviews with a headhunting mission from the Industrial Technology Re-search Institute (ITRI) for high-tech job openings in Taiwan.

The ITRI mission, headed by ITRI president Johnsee Lee (李鍾熙), visited Silicon Valley, San Diego, Chicago and Boston in a whirlwind tour of the US earlier this month, interviewing over 450 overseas Taiwanese who have studied engineering or computer science in the US or have worked in related fields.

The non-profit ITRI is offering more than 200 high-tech job openings for the overseas Taiwanese as the institute is envisaging an ambitious "Go Beyond R&D" project to be achieved by 2008.

According to Paul Lin (林寶樹), director-general of ITRI's Computer and Communication Research Labs, the interviewees include experienced professionals and young academics who have recently obtained doctoral degrees.

The ITRI hopes to recruit specialists and talent to beef up the institute's R&D prowess in several fields, including electronics, telecommunications, information technology, biochemistry, nanotechnology, advanced manufacturing and energy.

According to Lin, the number of US-trained scientists and high-tech professionals returning to Taiwan for career development has declined to 50 to 60 per year in recent years from 200 to 300 annually five or six years ago.

The ITRI has suffered a high personnel turnover rate over the past several years given that employees from the ITRI have been hotly sought after by R&D centers at home and abroad, Lin said.
