Millions leave it to last minute to file their taxes

By Joyce Huang  /  STAFF REPORTER

Tax offices will likely be crowded today, as the deadline approaches for the roughly half of the population who have yet to file their taxes for last year.

According to the tax offices, nearly 50 percent, or 2,459,957 people, of the nation's 5 million single and joint filing taxpayers had filed their tax reports as of last Friday.

That means another 2.5 million people have left it to the last day to do so.

To meet demand, tax offices will remain open until 7pm today while the online tax-filing system will be open until midnight.

To avoid long lines in front of tax offices, officials at the Ministry of Finance also urged taxpayers to take advantage of the 24-hour online tax-filing system and pay with credit cards if they owe taxes.

As of last Friday, 1.27 million people, or 51 percent of those who had filed, had used the online tax-filing system, according to the ministry.

Unfortunately, the online tax-filing system is not yet available to the nation's expatriate taxpayers, whom tax officials urged to visit the local tax offices and pay their taxes today.

According to the National Tax Administration of Taipei, only a few thousand expatriates had yet to file their taxes and will have to complete the chore today or face penalties.

If any taxpayer fails to meet today's deadline, a fine of 1 percent every two days will be imposed on their overdue balance within the next 30 days. The percentage will rise after 30 days, a tax administration press release warned.
