Acer's Q1 sales outpace larger rivals

BLOOMBERG

Acer Inc, the nation's third-largest computer company by market value, rose to the No. 5 rank in global personal computer market share after first-quarter growth outpaced its four larger rivals, market researcher IDC said.

Acer took a 3.3 percent share in the first quarter with a 36.5 percent increase in shipments compared with the same period a year earlier, the Massachusetts-based IDC said in a report on its Web site.

No. 1 Dell Inc, with an 18.6 percent market share, had the second-fastest growth, with a 28.2 percent jump in shipments. Japan's Toshiba Corp dropped out of the top-five rankings.

Acer said last November that it expected to rise two places to become the world's No. 5 PC seller this year, overtaking Toshiba and NEC Corp. Last year it re-entered the US, the world's largest PC market, through agreements with retailers such as Best Buy Co.

Acer also aims to double sales this year in China, the world's second-largest PC market, with a revamped distribution network and more spending on advertising.

"Acer's success in Europe is sustained," IDC said in the Web site report. "The company continues to have difficulty making headway in the US."

Acer gets about two-thirds of its sales from Europe, which IDC said remains one of the world's fastest-growing PC markets because of strong business demand and the improved buying power of the euro.
