■ MOF rules out using fund

Minister of Finance Lin Chuan (林全) yesterday urged investors to remain calm and rational in the run-up to Saturday's election. He said that the recent stock fluctuation didn't constitute the pre-condition for the government to activate its National Stability Fund. Although selling pressures remain strong after investors locked in profits and panicked over the political mudslinging by former Tuntex Group chairman Chen Yu-hao (陳由豪) on Monday, Lin said yesterday that foreign investors still remain confident in the local stock market.

■ Zoran sues MediaTek

Zoran Corp, whose chips are used in DVD players and digital cameras, filed a patent-infringement lawsuit in the US District Court in Los Angeles against MediaTek Inc (聯發科技), the world's largest maker of chips for DVD players. The complaint, which also names Mintek Inc, seeks monetary damages and an injunction to stop imports and sales of MediaTek and Mintek products that allegedly infringe on patents owned by Zoran and its Oak Technology Inc subsidiary, Zoran said in a statement. Company spokeswoman Betty Watkins couldn't say how much in damages Zoran is seeking.

■ NT dollar strengthens

Supported by a strengthening yen, the New Taiwan dollar yesterday rose NT$0.067 against the greenback to close at NT$33.36 on the Taipei foreign exchange market. Turnover was US$0.91 billion.
