EVA Airways Corp (長榮), the nation's second largest airline, opened a full cargo service between Taipei and Osaka yesterday in an effort to provide more comprehensive services in Northeast Asia, according to a company spokesman.
EVA Air will use B747-400 cargo planes, which can carry 340 tonnes of cargo, on the weekly flight every Thursday, the spokesman said.
EVA Air may consider expanding its service through code-sharing agreements with a Japanese carrier, the spokesman said.
The Taipei-Osaka cargo service is part of the airline's efforts to set up a global cargo transport network, the official added.
Biotech products, electronics parts and components, car accessories and fresh agricultural and farm produce form the bulk of shipments between Taipei and Osaka.
EVA Air started cargo services in 1995 using an MD-11. Today, it flies cargo services to 12 destinations and operates 33 cargo-passenger routes around the world.
Separately, China Eastern Airlines Corp (東方) and Taiwan's Far Eastern Air Transport Co (遠東) will offer charter flights to three destinations in South Korea starting this month to meet growing demand for travel to Asia's fourth-largest economy.
