The number of employees at Taiwan's economic processing zones reached 67,480 in January, the Economic Processing Zone Administration under the Ministry of Economic Affairs said yesterday.
The number represented an increase of 3,902 from the same month last year, administration officials said.
The officials said that Nantzu Economic Processing Zone in Kaohsiung recorded the largest number of employees at 37,640.
They said the new hires were mostly in the high-tech industry, especially the high-precision instrument industry. This sector's employee numbers rose by 520 from the same month last year.
The electronic and electrical engineering industries in the economic processing zones employ the largest number of people, more than 50,800, the administration added.
Economic processing zones (EPZs), which used to accommodate only labor-intensive and manufacturing businesses, will also be able to court high-tech and capital-intensive groups in the future, officials said.
To achieve that goal, the EPZs will shift gear from compounds that focus on production, processing and assembly to those that are also attractive to the warehousing, distribution, trade and information technology service-oriented and value-added industries, they added.
