Stocks rise as TSMC gets last-quarter record sales

Stocks rose, lifting the benchmark index to its third straight weekly gain yesterday. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC, 台積電) advanced after reporting fourth-quarter sales had hit a new record.

The TAIEX added 57.81, or 0.9 percent, to 6226.98. The index gained 3.1 percent this week.

About the same number of stocks rose as fell. TAIEX futures for January delivery rose 1 percent to 6270.

December sales surged 68 percent to NT$8.5 billion from NT$5.1 billion a year ago. Sales declined from NT$12 billion in the previous month.

TSMC advanced NT$2, or 3.1 percent, to NT$67.50. Fourth-quarter sales jumped 40 percent to a record NT$57.8 billion (US$1.7 billion) from a year earlier.

Sales last year surged 25 percent to a record NT$201.9 billion from 2002, the company said.

Acer Inc, Taiwan's largest seller of personal computers under a company's own name, rose NT$1, or 1.9 percent, to NT$52.50.
