Job security trumps all other concerns in survey

AP , SINGAPORE

Job security, ahead of the economy and health, is the main concern of consumers across 13 Asian economies, a regional survey by AC Nielsen revealed yesterday.

The company's latest online consumer confidence poll showed that 30 percent of the 7,230 respondents said their "biggest concern" was holding onto their jobs. This was an increase of 1 percent over the previous survey conducted in May.

The economy and health were the second and third top concerns with 22 percent and 21 percent respectively, AC Nielsen said.

Regionally, economies have been battered this year by the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome, the war in Iraq, terror threats and a global travel slump -- pushing unemployment up and sending economies into a tailspin.

While not the main concern, 63 percent of respondents expressed at least "some concern" over health issues, virtually unchanged from the May poll, the statement said.

The number of respondents with at least "some concern" over terrorism fell to 32 percent from 39 percent since the last survey despite repeated warnings from regional governments about security.

The survey was the result of a random online poll of consumers in Australia, China, India, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, New Zealand, Philippines, Japan and Indonesia.
