Government set to unveil ambitious infrastructure plan

The government is to unveil 10 ambitious infrastructure projects expected to cost tens of billions of dollars over the next five years, officials said yesterday.

Premier Yu Shyi-kun will today announce details of the projects, estimated to cost NT$500 billion (US$14.7 billion ), Cabinet spokesman Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) told reporters.

Mass rapid transit systems will be built for several metropolitan areas and one that links the CKS International Airport with Taipei, he said.

The rest of funds will be invested in projects as diverse as sewage, broadband Internet networks, five reservoirs, expansion of Kaohsiung harbor, establishment of world-class research centers and universities, as well a fine arts museums and music halls.

Officials said the projects, whose budgets are awaiting legislative's final approval, are expected to boost the economy.

The government recently raised its official forecast for this year's economic growth to 3.15 percent from the 3.06 percent projected in August.
