President Chen Shui-bian (³¯€ô«ó) said yesterday that the production value of industries related to digital content is expected to reach NT$370 billion (US$10.88 billion) by 2006 and he expressed hope that the nation's excellence in digital content will be known around the world.

The president made the remarks when he received the Taiwan winners of the 2003 World Cyber Games. More than 1,000 competitors from 55 countries took part in the games in Seoul last month, and the Taiwan team won two gold, one silver and one bronze medal.

He congratulated them and urged them to continue their efforts in order to help promote "made in Taiwan digital entertainment" and let the world know the nation's passion and strength in digital entertainment.

Chen said the 21st Century is the era of digital entertainment. It is estimated that world consumption of TV, books, music and the Internet will grow by 32 percent annually between 2001 and 2005.

Every country attaches great importance to the development of the digital and multimedia content industries, he said.

Chen stressed that the digital content industry has been given high priority in Taiwan and that the Executive Yuan envisions Taiwan as the design, development and production center of the digital content industry in the Asia-Pacific region.

The government will also help with the development of peripheral industries, to make the sector the locomotive of an e-Taiwan project.

He also said it is estimated that the production value of industries related to digital content will create more than 40,000 jobs for talent from all over the world, making it a large-scale industry producing top-quality products.
