Demand for computers growing in Asia

A surge in demand in Taiwan and large government and corporate orders around the Asia Pacific bolstered the region's market for personal computers (PCs), a research group's survey showed yesterday.

International Data Corp (IDC) reported strong 13 percent growth compared to the same period a year earlier amid a revival in large orders.

Following the quarter's performance, the strongest this year, IDC predicted full-year growth of 9 percent for Singapore's PC market and 13 percent for the region.

The preliminary findings, published in The Business Times, cited "a general upbeat sentiment in key markets like Australia, Taiwan and India."

"Vendor efforts to capture back-to-school demand as well as continued government and education purchases in many countries ... also drove PC shipments" in the third quarter, IDC said.

The compounded annual growth rate through 2007 is expected to hit 14 percent for the region excluding Japan.

Bryan Ma, IDC's senior manager for personal systems, cautioned against reading too much into the high figures for this year.

"This is relative to a really bad time last year," he was quoted as saying. "It's far from boom time."

Across the region, the prognosis is positive, he added. Several Asia-Pacific economies are experiencing renewed demand for PCs from companies and government agencies that had been forced by the economic slowdown to hold on to old PCs beyond their normal lifetime, Ma said.

"The replacement cycle is long overdue," Ma said.

The top five computer sellers boosted shipments and market share. Legend Group Ltd (聯想集團), Asia's No. 1 computer maker, increased sales by 16 percent to 1 million units.

Legend increased its market share in Asia outside Japan to 13.6 percent in the third quarter from 13.3 percent a year ago.

Hewlett-Packard Co, the No. 2 seller, boosted its share to 9.8 percent from 8.2 percent. IBM Corp, ranked No. 3, increased its share to 6.9 percent from 6.3 percent.
