The Taiwan Regional Association of Tanneries (皮革公會) is set to sign a whopping US$500 million contract with Texas' leather industry on Friday for the purchase of millions of animal hides, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Houston reported on Monday.
A delegation, led by association chairman Hsu Kuo-hsuan (許國軒), is scheduled to visit Texas from tomorrow through Sunday to source leather raw materials and strengthening trade ties with the state's hide merchants.
Hsu will join Jeff Moseley, chief executive officer of the Texas Eco-nomic Development, on Friday in endorsing a letter of intent, paving the way for the signing of the US$500 million contract for 4.5 million to 5 million cow and pig hides expected to be delivered by Texan leather merchants between next year and 2005.
The US$500 million contract will mark the largest order ever placed by the Taiwanese leather industry with Texas, officials from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Houston said.
According to US Customs statistics, Taiwan is the fourth largest leather and hide export outlet of the US.
