Turning Taisalt into gold

Cheng Pao-ching is credited with transforming state-run Taiwan Salt Co from a loss-making salt-maker into a biotech firm by developing skin-care products, making the company one of the most profitable state-run enterprises. Cheng, a former DPP lawmaker who took over chairmanship of Taisalt in March last year, shared his secrets in turning salt into gold with `Taipei Times' staff reporter Jessie Ho

TT: What do you hope to achieve for Taisalt in your tenure?

Cheng: As I said earlier, I hope to make Taisalt a big name in the international community with our quality skin-care products. To achieve that, I need to work harder in expanding our market share in the world. We are now testing our products in the Hong Kong, Japanese and the US markets. We further started to set up department store outlets in major department stores in Taiwan to compete with foreign cosmetics brand names. Our first department storefront was just opened in Breeze Center (微風廣場) on Sept. 1.

TT: What would be your next career move if you step down from your current post in Taisalt?

Cheng: At this moment, I just want to perform my duties well. I have no further plans. In fact, entering the political circle, whether being a legislator or chairman of a state-owned company, is not what I expected. Life is just full of surprises. However, no matter what I do, I hope I can make a difference and being remembered by history as a statesman like Yoshida Shigeru, the former Japanese prime minister, who is my favorite statesman. Although he stepped down from his post for signing a peace treaty in 1951 for Japan that was considered as jeopardizing Japan, it was later proved to be a source of Japan's economic prosperity.
