Singapore Air settles with NYU professor over crash

BLOOMBERG

Singapore Airlines Ltd, Asia's largest carrier by market value, settled a lawsuit over how much it owes a retired New York University professor for injuries he suffered in a 2000 plane crash in Taiwan.

Harald Linke's attorneys announced the settlement, for undisclosed financial terms, two days after lawyers gave opening statements. Linke was the first plaintiff to go to trial over the crash of the Los Angeles-bound plane in Taipei that killed 83 of the 179 people on board. Singapore Airlines has offered US$400,000 to victims and US$20,000 to survivors to settle claims out of court.

"It took the empaneling of the jury to get Singapore Airlines to do the honorable thing," said Brian Panish, a lawyer for Linke, in a statement.
