While many global companies consider shifting their regional headquarters closer to customers in India or China, Intelsat has moved its Asian headquarters from Washington to Singapore.
The world's second-largest satellite company has made the city-state its hub, covering the region from Taiwan, China, Japan and South Korea in the north to the Indian subcontinent in the west and Australasia in the south, The Business Times said.
"Singapore is a very good place to be to serve all of Asia," Intelsat's chief executive officer Conny Kullman was quoted as saying.
Intelsat, with annual revenues of about US$1 billion, appointed Ashley Fernandes regional vice president of Asia-Pacific sales and Stephen Spengler global vice president of its data, carrier and Internet business units.
"The Asia region is very important to Intelsat and contributes 18 per cent to global annual revenues," Kullman said during a visit to Singapore.
"The region is starting to see some stability now," he noted, with June revenues up 12 percent over the same period last year.
Kullman last month completed the most comprehensive restructuring of the company in its 37-year history, transforming Intelsat from an intergovernment cooperative to a private company.
The next big step is to go for an initial public offer planned for the second quarter of next year with a listing on the New York Stock Exchange, Kullman said.
