Stocks fell for the first day in five yesterday. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC, 台積電), the world's largest maker of computer chips on a subcontracting basis, declined as some investors judged its 15 percent gain over the past four sessions excessive.
The TAIEX fell 14.86, or 0.3 percent, to 4,678.08. It earlier gained as much as 0.5 percent.
About three stocks declined for every two that gained. Turnover was NT$88.76 billion (US$2.55 billion). The Taiwan Futures Index lost 0.2 percent to 4,658. TSMC fell NT$0.50, or 0.9 percent, to NT$56.
