For the past three years Lite-On, together with the China External Trade Development Council, has sponsored a design contest for students and professional engineers from Taiwan, Hong Kong and China who come up with innovative designs and products.
There are 902 entries in this year's awards, 80 of them from professionals and the rest from schools. Twenty-six Taiwanese schools and 21 Chinese schools have entered projects, institutions in Italy, the UK, Canada and the US.
The entrants are competing to share NT$800,000 in prize money, divided among three winners.
