Chang said that the company is aware that the nation's newspaper readership is on the decline especially among young people, who are more of a "photographic generation."
She expressed confidence that the paper's focus on pictures and human-interest reporting should be able to attract the buying power of today's youth.
According to ACNielson Taiwan, newspaper readership in the 12 and 60-year-old age group has declined to 50.4 percent in the first quarter, down from 55 percent last year, 62 percent in 1999 and 70 percent in 1995.
Although the actual impact of Apple Daily on local newspapers remains to be seen, the paper is sure to put a squeeze on advertisement incomes, said an industry watcher, who requested anonymity.
He said that Apple Daily may eat up one-fourth of the annual NT$20 billion newspaper advertising market.
