The number of industrial and business companies in Taiwan increased by only 7.7 percent over the past five years, with the number of industrial and business companies in the south surpassing that in north for the first time, according to statistics released yesterday.
The latest census on the industrial, business and service sectors released by the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS) show that development in the south has boomed, mainly because of the construction of the Tainan Science-based Industrial Park and the Luchu Science-based Industrial Park.
In comparison, development in the north has become saturated and some industries have moved overseas or given up altogether.
The DGBAS said that there were 933,107 industrial and business firms nationwide last year, an increase of 7.7 percent over the previous five years. The industrial firms in particular were down by 0.8 percent, or 1,596 firms fewer than five years ago.
DGBAS officials said that industrial and business firms in the south increased by 25,754 over the past five years. The number of firms in the north only increased by 23,179, a marked decrease from the increase of 64,000 in the previous census.
According to the census, some industrial zones in the north have become idle, with office and factory space in Taipei and Taichung counties having shrunk by 6.8 percent over the past five years. Job opportunities also decreased by 19,000.
The census, conducted every five years, was based on interviews with more than 900,000 companies between April 1 and July 15 last year.
