Chicago February factory index fell to 54.9 from 56

"The labor market is still weak," said Joseph Abate, a senior economist at Lehman Brothers Inc in New York. "Manufacturing's not expanding fast enough to create a significant amount of jobs."

Demand is picking up for some Chicago employers.

Sales rose 11 percent in the quarter ended Jan. 31 at Deere & Co, the world's biggest maker of farm equipment, based in Moline, Illinois. Sales gained 7.8 percent at CNH Global NV, the world's largest maker of combines, based in Lake Forest, Illinois. Nucor Corp, the biggest US maker of steel construction beams.
