Taiwan becomes a convenience-store heaven for citizens

CNA , TAIPEI

Taiwan leads all other countries in world in terms of the number of convenience stores per capita, the Cabinet-level Fair Trade Commission reported yesterday.

The nation has 6,851 convenience outlets, or one store for every 3,357 people.

Quoting the latest tallies from Convenience Store News magazine, commission officials said Japan, which used to top the global list, had 37,000 convenience stores at the end of November, or one store for every 3,421 citizens.

Taiwan is expected to continue to top the list in terms of number of convenience stores per capita as the number of new convenience store openings in Japan has slowed in recent years, the commission said.

The study found that by area, 3,833 of the 6,581 convenience stores in Taiwan are located in northern Taiwan, representing 56 percent of the total. The Taipei area tops all other regions in Taiwan, with 2,688 outlets.
