Beijing looks to Year of the Clone

China is getting ready for the Year of the Cloned Goat, as its first surviving goat cloned from adult cells is expected to give birth again soon, state media said yesterday.

Yangyang, who is two-and-a-half years old and is already the mother of twins, became pregnant after mating with an angora goat, and delivery could happen any time now, Xinhua news agency reported.

One of Yangyang's twin daughters at the Yangling high-tech development zone in northwest China's Xian city is also pregnant, the agency said.

Yangyang was the second Chinese goat cloned from adult cells, and the first successful one.

State media reported Yangyang's second pregnancy in June last year which seemingly did not go to plan given the absence of follow-up news and the five-month gestation period for goats.

Similar incidents, such as the death last year of China's first calf cloned from a domestically produced embryo, testify to the bumps on the road to becoming a cloning superpower.
