Farm sector feels market changes after WTO entry

AGRICULTURE An aging farm population coupled with market liberalization is beginning to take a toll on the neglected sector

In the past, local farmers often over-planted crops that commanded strong market prices, resulting in oversupply and poor profits. Farmers must find strength in numbers.

"Forming strategic alliances is therefore beneficial in improving production and increasing profits," Cheng said, citing official statistics that show 12 successful strategic alliances that have been formed among floricultural farmers and fruit growers last year.

"Farmers are aging fast while the younger generation has continuously shifted from the agricultural sector to the industrial and service sectors," Huang said.
