Construction of a Taiwan-Chinese joint-venture brewery got underway yesterday in the southernmost Taiwan county of Pingtung, amid great fanfare.
Pingtung County Magistrate Su Chia-chuan (
Twenty-two senior executives from Tsing Tao, including Tsing Tao Chairman Jin Zheguo (金志國), traveled to Taiwan to attend the ceremony. Jin said the new facility is the Tsing Tao's first plant outside mainland China. "We have high expectations for its prospects," he said.
The Taiwan Tsing Tao began to market Tsing Tao-produced beer in Taiwan in April this year. The joint-venture firm has since sold 30,000 tons of the China-made beer around the island, prompting it to decide to set up a production facility in Taiwan.
"The beer market in China is excessively competitive. In contrast, Taiwan now has only one beer producer -- the Taiwan Tobacco and Wine Co. We think there is ample room for our joint-venture firm, " he said, adding that the Tsing Tao will provide technology and management know-how for the brewery.
