Acer Inc reports goal to sell at least 140,000 PCs

AFP , TAIPEI

Taiwan's leading computer maker, Acer Inc (宏電), hopes to double its deliveries of portable personal computers to the local market next year. The manufacturer hopes to sell 140,000-150,000 units, it was reported yesterday.

Lin Hsien-lang (林顯郎), Acer's president of operations for the greater China area, was quoted by a local Chinese-language newspaper as saying that Acer's desktop PC shipments in the domestic market are seen rising 20 percent to 30 percent next year.

Acer delivered 26,400 notebook PCs to the Taiwan market in the third quarter, surpassing peer Asustek Computer Inc (華碩電腦) because of cost reduction resulting from outsourcing contracts to Quanta Computer Inc (廣達電腦) and Compal Electronics Inc (仁寶電腦).

Lin expects falling liquid-crystal display monitor prices to drive PC market growth next year in Taiwan.

Taiwan's entire notebook and desktop PC market is estimated at a total of 1.2 million units this year, of which notebook PCs account for around 400,000 units, he said.

Lin said he expects the notebook PC market in Taiwan to increase to 500,000 units next year. Acer yesterday said profit in the third quarter was NT$523 (US$15 million).
