Compal leads TAIEX up

The TAIEX gained 60.94 yesterday, or 1.6 percent, to 3,910.98, as Compal Electronics Inc (仁寶電腦) shares gained following a decline in Taiwan's currency.

Far EasTone Telecommunications Co (遠傳電信) fell NT$0.9, or 3.4 percent, to NT$26. Taiwan's third-largest publicly traded mobile-phone operator said it plans to raise as much as NT$215 million selling shares and bonds overseas. The company will use funds from the bond sale to upgrade its network.

Nan Ya Plastic Corp (南亞科技) rose NT$0.8, or 3.2 percent, to NT$26. Taiwan's largest maker of chemicals used in plastics plans to sell NT$5 billion of bonds before the end of the year, taking advantage of low interest rates to replace older debt.

Compal Electronics rose NT$1.9, or 6.9 percent, to NT$29.4. Taiwan's second-largest notebook-computer maker may write back as much as NT$300 million after the New Taiwan dollar fell 4 percent in the third quarter, the c reported on its Web site.

Chantek Electronic Co fell NT$0.15, or 6.6 percent, to NT$2.11. The semiconductor packager forecast a NT$160.7 million loss for the year, compared with a NT$774.9 million loss last year.

Diamond Flower Electric Instrument Co rose NT$0.2, or 1.3 percent, to NT$16. The computer circuit-board maker plans to spend as much as NT$270 million to buy back 10 million shares, or 8.5 percent of its outstanding shares, starting today for two months.

Taiwan International Securities Corp rose NT$0.5, or 0.8 percent, to NT$6.3. Taiwan's sixth-largest broker plans to spend as much as NT$165 million to buy back 15 million shares, or 1.9 percent of its outstanding shares. The buyback began Friday and ends on Dec. 10.
