Taiwan prepares to host world trade fair during 2008

CNA , GENEVA

A Taiwan delegation composed of government officials and business executives arrived in Geneva, Switzerland Saturday to study Swiss experience in organizing a world trade fair.

"The visit also marks the start of preparations for a world exposition scheduled for 2008 in Taiwan," said Chang Jing-sen (張景森), vice chairman of the Cabinet-level Council for Economic Planning and Development.

Chang said the 2008 Taiwan Expo will mark the first time that Taiwan has ever organized a world-class trade fair. "The Cabinet has listed the event as one of the major national development plans for the next six years," he said.

Switzerland's world fair has a multiple-site formula, being held in four different cities.

Chang said that the Taiwan expo will feature cutting-edge technologies. "It is a massive project and requires comprehensive planning," he said.

All the 11 cities and townships where the yet to be built high-speed railway will make stops are likely sites for the world trade fair.

Chang said the expo will be timed to coincidide with the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. "By so doing, we hope to attract more foreign exhibitors and visitors," he said.
