Taiwan attracted US$4.109 billion worth of foreign direct investment last year because it was on the threshold of entering the WTO, according to a UN report released Tuesday.
Although the amount of foreign direct investment that Taiwan attracted in 2001 was below the amount of US$4.928 billion for 2000, the drop was much less compared to the drop in the total amount of global foreign direct investment, which decreased by more than half between 2000 and 2001, according to the report.
The report said that, with Taiwan's WTO admission in January of this year, the nation is going to become even more attractive to foreign investors.
It added that the service industry is expected to replace the manufacturing industry to become the engine in promoting foreign direct investment growth in Taiwan.
With the liberalization of foreign direct investment, the report noted, the levels of inbound and outbound direct investment in Taiwan could reach new highs.
