Taiwan may have banned imports of Kweichow Moutai

BLOOMBERG , SHANGHAI

Kweichow Moutai Co, maker of the powerful liquor used by Communist leaders to toast former US President Richard Nixon and other historic visitors at official banquets, has been barred from exporting to Taiwan, the Caijing newspaper said, citing Qiao Hong, Moutai's president.

Taiwan's trade office announced the decision on Aug. 16, without giving any reason, the report said. Officials at Taiwan's Board of Foreign Trade weren't available to confirm the report.

Moutai had planned to start exports on Aug. 1, expanding into Taiwan's traditional liquor market, estimated to be worth NT$15 billion (US$440 million).

Tsingtao Brewery Co, China's biggest brewer, started selling in Taiwan in April and plans to open its first plant on the island later this year.
