Taiwan's TAIEX had its biggest gain in almost six months after Chinese-language newspapers reported computer memory-chip makers are cutting supply as they upgrade their equipment. Nanya Technology Corp (南亞科技) jumped, rising NT$2.4, or 6.9 percent, to NT$37.20.
The TAIEX surged 213.91, or 4.1 percent, to 5416.50, its biggest percentage gain since Jan. 21. Within the index, more than 22 stocks rose for every one that fell. The index rose for a second week, gaining 3.1 percent. The total value of trade was NT$87.48 billion (US$2.63 billion).
Chip prices may rise as supply falls by about a tenth in the third quarter, the reports said, citing unnamed chip distributors. Hynix Semiconductor Inc, Samsung Electronics Co and Micron Technology Inc are cutting production as they upgrade machines. Hynix and Samsung denied the reports.
