Government finishes its first sale of state property

By Joyce Huang  /  STAFF REPORTER

The government has successfully auctioned off the first batch of state-owned land in metropolitan Taipei, reaping NT$2.4 billion in the process, an official from the government's public property management agency said yesterday.

The sale involved parcels where military residential compounds were once located.

"Nine out of 20 deals were closed [yesterday], bringing in NT$2.4 billion, which was NT$736 million higher than the floor price of NT$1.6 billion," Su Wei-chen (蘇維成), secretary general of the National Property Bureau under the Ministry of Finance, said at a press conference yesterday.

"This paints a clear picture that the economic turnaround has arrived," Su said.

Yesterday's auction attracted many property developers and investors, who placed bids on the land that formerly belonged to the Ministry of National Defense, Su said. One successful sale was for a 630-ping residential plot of land located at the intersection of Changchun Rd and Lungchiang Rd in Taipei. The land went for 80 percent more than its floor price.

"The parcel brought in NT$820,000 per ping," or NT$516.6 million, Su said.

The bureau plans to hold another auction on May 20 to sell off a second batch of state-owned property, which includes three parcels located in the fast developing commercial Hsinyi district -- dubbed as Taipei's Manhattan -- in eastern Taipei, Su said.

"The highest floor price will be NT$2.77 million per ping for the bid of a 2,265-ping unit of land, which is designed for use as entertainment facilities in that area," he said.
