The popularity of using the Internet to read news is growing in Taiwan, with many TV stations and major newspapers on the nation offering online editions, an Internet research company said yesterday.
Reading news online has already become a habit for many Internet surfers, with more than half of Taiwan's Internet population clicking on to news reports, according to NetValue Taiwan.
Some 53.4 percent of the nation's 5.68 million Internet users read online news in February, compared with only 37.4 percent in the same month last year.
The male-to-female ratio of news readers in February was 55.4 percent to 44.6 percent, with 43 percent of surfers interested in obtaining news online aged 15 to 24 years old, it said.
The three most popular news websites in Taiwan in February were ettoday.com, udnnews.com and chinatimes.com, while the favourite news portal sites were news.yahoo.com, news.yam.com and news.pchome.com.tw, it said.
The number of people using the Internet in Taiwan jumped to 7.82 million people, or 35 percent of the population, by the end of last year -- mostly because of increased high-speed asymmetrical digital subscriber lines and cable modem connections.
