The government announced plans yesterday to spend NT$1.2 trillion (US$34.19 billion) on boosting the nation's competitiveness with China.
The funding allocation was aimed at strengthening technology industry infrastructure as well as upgrading people's cultural and social skills, a Cabinet official said.
The NT$1.2 trillion budget matches the amount which Beijing set aside to build infrastructure for the 2008 Olympics.
Premier Yu Shyi-kun said Tuesday that the projects would lift the country's research and development budget to 2.3 percent of GDP in three years, up from 2.05 percent in 2000.
