Bad-loan ratio for financial institutions reaches record level

The non-performing loan (NPL) ratio in Taiwan's banking sector rose to a record of 7.96 percent at the end of third quarter, up 0.52 percent from the previous quarter, according to Ministry of Finance statistics.

The NPL ratio for grass-roots financial institutions fell to 15.71 percent, a 2.79 percent drop over the previous quarter, after the financial reconstruction fund spent NT$77.3 billion to clean up problems within 36 grass-roots financial institutions.

The ministry's Bureau of Monetary Affairs said yesterday that the NPL ratio for Taiwan's entire banking sector reached a record NT$1.1 trillion at the end of third quarter, up from NT$1.06 trillion at the end of second quarter. The NPL ratio for domestic banks at the end of third quarter was 7.52 percent.
