Cisco Systems Inc, Broadcom Corp and other makers of telecommunications equipment and parts likely will report disappointing sales and profit for several additional quarters, investors and analysts said.
A dozen companies, including Motorola Inc, JDS Uniphase Corp and Sonus Networks Inc, have said in the past month that third-quarter results will lag their own or analysts' forecasts, often sending their shares declining.
In addition, the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the US halted sales for at least a week, making it tougher for the struggling communications-equipment industry to regain the investor support it had when the companies boomed in the late 1990s. The gear vendors had been reeling from reduced spending by customers.
