Government set to build industrial park in Taichung County

In addition to the science-based industrial parks in Hsinchu in northern Taiwan and Tainan in southern Taiwan, the government is planning to invest over NT$10 billion to develop a third industrial park in central Taiwan.

An evaluation group headed by Stan Shih (¬I®¶ºa), chairman of the Acer Group (§»¹q¶°¹Î), has decided that the new industrial park will be located at two sites -- a 300-hectare piece of land in Taichung City and Taichung County and a 136-hectare piece of land in Yunlin. Since early this year, the evaluation group composed of industrialists and government officials has visited seven locations in Taichung City, Taichung County, Changhwa County, Yunlin County and Nantou County in central Taiwan.

Shih said that Taichung was chosen for the advantages it possessed in terms of good location, sufficient infrastructure, transportation networks, and numerous educational and academic research institutions. In the past several years, many manufacturers of precision machinery have chosen Taichung as their production base.

The 136-hectare site in Yunlin County is close to the projected high-speed railway station and is reserved land of National Taiwan University's College of Medicine and its affiliated hospital and the university's College of Engineering,, Shih said.

Huang Wen-hsiung (¶À¤å¶¯), vice chairman of the National Science Council, said that the government is planning to make the new park a center for the aerospace, optoelectronics, telecommunications and biochemical industries.
