Semicom Taiwan 2001, the largest semiconductor exposition in the region, has been postponed until today because of Typhoon Nari, the China External Trade Development Council (CETRA, 外貿協會) said yesterday.
The CETRA, which is sponsoring the event, said it postponed the Sept. 17-19 exposition after Typhoon Nari brought heavy rains to northern Taiwan, causing the death of 21 people and seriously flooding many areas of Taipei.
The CETRA said that 509 local and foreign semiconductor manufacturers will take part in this year's exhibition, a sharp increase from the 322 manufacturers that participated in last year's event. President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) is scheduled to address the exposition's opening ceremony.
The Taipei exposition has become one of the semiconductor industry's biggest events. As the global economy is in the midst of a slowdown, the number of transactions at this year's show will be closely watched.
