Siemens of Germany won a US$326-million contract yesterday to supply cars, signalling and a power system to a mass rapid transit system for Taiwan's port city of Kaohsiung.

"Signing the contract in a third country is to enable us to seek a neutral party's arbitration should disputes arise after the line is built," the spokesperson said.
Siemens will provide 126 rail cars, signalling, direct-current power system and consultancy service for the rapid transit line.
The 42.7km line will consist of two lines. Construction will begin in October and is scheduled to be finished in October 2007.
Taichung also plans to build a rapid transit line to ease traffic congestion.
