UMC likely to suffer a loss for 2Q

SEMICONDUCTORSThe chipmaker may post a loss of US$22.1 million in the three months to June after sales fell because of a dramatic drop in orders from its major customers

UMC shares have fallen almost 14 percent since the beginning of this year. TSMC has risen about 1 percent in the period, while third-ranked Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing Ltd (特許半導體) slipped almost 11 percent.
