Damage to a submarine cable that cut off Taiwan's Internet access two weeks ago has been repaired, China's Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.
The severed connection disrupted Internet access for over 27 million Internet surfers in Taiwan and China, making North American sites inaccessible. The undersea cable carries information toQuanta Computer Inc designs, develops, manufactures, markets and supports a full range of computer systems. Its products include desktop computer systems, notebook computers, servers, motherbroads, storage products and other related computer components. and from sites around Asia including Australia, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan and North America.
China was forced to divert some Internet traffic onto satellites, slowing connections considerably and making many North American sites inaccessible, after the Feb. 9 disruption.
The downed cable drew the ire of China's Web community, with one hacker shutting down 40 Web sites, including sites belonging to Beijing Telecom, a subsidiary of China's largest Internet service provider, China Telecom.
Reportedly, a message on the hacked sites, says: "This is just a warning to telecom companies for your slow restoration of the cable." It was signed "O.~"
