Bid likely for TFT division

Taiwan's leading computer makers are teaming up to bid for the division of Hyundai Group that manufactures flat notebook computer monitor panels, a company official said yesterday.

Mitac International Corp, Compal Electronics Inc and Clevo Co have together submitted an offer of more than NT$5 billion (US$157.34 million) for Hyundai Electronics Industries Co, an Economic Daily News report said.

The division manufactures TFT-LCD (thin film transistor, liquid crystal display) panels used in notebook computers.

"We joined the tender because we need a more stable supply of TFT-LCDs for our notebook computers," Mitac Internationals pokesman Lin Rong-shen said.

Lin declined to reveal the value of the bid offered by the Taiwanese consortium, which was submitted to Hyundai last week. No member of the consortium produces TFT-LCDs.

"There has been an acute shortage of TFT-LCDs worldwide, a trend that is expected to last for another year," Lin said.

The Economic Daily News said the Taiwan group had made its bid to Hyundai last week and was waiting for a reply.
