Taiwan to remain top notebook PC producer this year

    CNA, TAIPEI

Taiwan will remain the world's No. 1 notebook producer, exporting between 12.63 million and 14.3 million units this year, a trade source said yesterday.

However, the figures represent a decrease between 0.5 percent and 2.5 percent as compared with the previous year, because of the worldwide economic slowdown couple with the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the US, the source said.

In terms of sales, Taiwan will export worth between US$11.47 billion and US$11.66 billion in notebooks this year, or a decrease of 15 percent from a year earlier, the source said.

Taiwan-made notebooks will remain accounting for more than 50 percent of the total world production for the year, the source said.

To cope with stiff market competitiveness and the daily profit reduction situation, local notebook-PC makers have begun to set up their base of operations in China, especially the greater Shanghai area, or have increased their proportion of OEM, the source said.

Quanta Computer Inc (廣達電腦) and Compal Electronics Inc (仁寶電腦), Taiwan's largest notebook producers, have begun to produce motherboards in their factories in China.

Quanta exported 4.3 million notebook computers and surpassed Toshiba of Japan to become the world's No. 1 producer, the source said.

The global demand for notebook computers is estimated to be around 25 million units this year, according to Taiwan industry estimates.
