Central bank tells how to detect fake Taiwan notes

The rampancy of counterfeit bank notes in circulation in Taiwan has prompted the central bank to strengthen efforts at educating the public on how to distinguish fake bills from real ones.

The central bank has added two items on its Web site's home page to teach the public the different ways to distinguish forged bank notes from real ones and to explain the law regarding printing and using counterfeit bills.

The central bank's Web site (www.cbc.gov.tw) has provided five basic methods to help the general public distinguish whether a bank note is fake or genuine.

Counterfeit bank notes of NT$100, NT$500 and NT$1,000 denomination, especially those of NT$1,000 denomination, have frequently been found in circulation recently. Even counterfeit coins of NT$50 denomination have been found in circulation.

A person who is found guilty of counterfeiting or altering currently used Taiwan currency may receive a minimum sentence of five-year imprisonment or a maximum sentence of death. A person who unknowingly receives counterfeit currency and then knowingly uses it or delivers to others with the intent of putting into circulation may be fined NT$15,000.
