Spring Scream may be over, but this summer's outdoor music and beach parties are hardly finished. At least three major outdoor rockfests will take place over the next two weekends, and August will see Taiwan's biggest rave of the year at Lungtung (龍洞) on the northeast coast. Here's a quick run down of what's coming up.
Ho-hai-yan 2000 (國際海洋音樂祭): Saturday, July 15 at Fulung Beach. Free admission. Around 20 of the best bands from Spring Scream — from Taiwan and abroad — will perform on three stages at this afternoon and evening beach party. Local mainstays like the Clippers (夾子) and Sticky Rice will share the stage with Taiwan's off the hook hip hop sensation MC Hotdog and Japanese arrivals Mimie-Chan and Miracle Saru, who played what was arguably Spring Scream's best set. The main organizer behind the event is TCM records, a Taipei label involved in the "underground" music scene. The money, however, is coming from the Taipei County government.
Century Band Rock Concert (世紀Band搖滾合唱團): Friday, July 21 at the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. The concert includes five local bands who are making the transition from underground to mainstream, including Mayday, The Boss Band, Truck, Backquarter, and Luantan (亂彈). Admission is free.
Taiwan Rock Festival 2000 (野台開唱): Friday, July 21 to Sunday, July 23 at the Children's Amusement Center (兒童育樂中心) on Chungshan North Road. All considered, this will be the biggest concert and will include most of the bands previously mentioned, plus many more.
Outdoor Rave: Saturday, August 12 at Lungtung (龍洞), 20 minutes north of Keelung. DJ GoAhead, one of the event's organizers, claims it is shaping up to be Taiwan's biggest rave this year. It will also feature live music, including Air Dolphin from Taiwan and Hippy House of Germany, whose music is self explanatory. Ticket price hasn't been settled yet.
